VOCAL-3L is a unique filter system for all kinds of used air, especially from digital print environments where any kind of solvent and UV curing inks are used. Read why we did it

It’s based on a 3 level filter system containing a fluid filter absorbing VOC and already a bit of ozone, an aerosol for drying the air and a compact filter for filtering all other small particles and the ozone. The last level consists of a class H13 filter. This combination of different types of filters allows us to filter more than 90% (which is better than normal air in an office environment!) of harmful and violent parts. In some test we found that even more than 95% had been filtered. The capacity of 500 m³/h allows the system to work with at least 2 printers parallel and makes VOCAL-3L even interesting for big printers.

The air is moved by a 8 shovels freewheeling aluminium high performance fan system with 5 speed levels. The shovels are protected against salt water and other chemicals. The complete device is covered by a special powder layer so the complete system is highly corrosion protected and therefore dedicated and suitable for even robust environments and usage.

MODE OF ACTION - The sucked air will be guided above the special liquid, which acts like a magnet and catches harmful chemicals like Diethyldiglycol or Butylglycolacetat and other chemicals/substances used in Solvent, eco and mild solvent inks.

The moisture and other particles up to a minimum size of 0,3 µ will be filtered in the second stage, the aerosol filter. The remaining particles and the ozone will be filtered out in the third stage, the compact filter with H13 certification. The result: nearly 100% filtered air and even better than the allowed contamination for office environments – nearly ready, even for use in normal office environment.

SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE

Depending on the usage and the type of inks used, the lifetime of the fluid and the other filter stages will vary either in relation to each other or in complete. The system as well has a longer lifetime compared to carbon systems but it has to be controlled and maintained. We advise if no other parameters ask for other intervals to change/clean the parts frequently: liquid and compact filter after 6 months and the aerosol filter (can be flushed under water) after 3 months. Compared to the costs of carbon filter segments the use of VOCAL-3L is really economic. TEPEDE offers a maintenance contract so customers do not need to pay attention.

 Background

Safety of our customers, our employees and our environment has highest priority in our daily operation and all processes.

In terms of contaminated/used air, produced by solvent and UV printers we sold, does this mean that we have always taken care that an appropriate solution for air purification was available. If not, it was an obligation for our customers to install one.  We have offered solutions, based on active carbon filters provided by the printer manufacturers, ourselves.

Unfortunately, we noticed that these solutions were either to low dimensioned and/or the carbon filter saturated too quickly. A saturated carbon filter does not work properly, so all the contaminated air will stay in the room.
We have encountered that due to
a lack of knowledge, costs or even indifference the filter had not been replaced.
It’s good to understand that active carbon filters are able to absorb about 10% of their own weight, this means that, if the filter system contains about 1 kg it’s able to absorb just 100 g of contaminant. In real production environments this might happen even after a few days!

Even tests with so called eco solvent printers have shown that a certain pollution occurs, not necessarily with VOC’s but other particles which are not really health friendly. We registered a contamination up to 5 times higher than allowed by law for office work environments. 

With these results and knowledge in the back, we approached a few companies specialised in filter solution for harmful environments. Our aim was to find a solution that filters all small particles, VOC’s and even ozone at a reasonable price.

Of course, in real production environments big fan systems are installed but even here it can not always be guaranteed that the air has been filtered before blowing it outside. But keep in mind, more and more printers have been installed and will be installed in unsuitable environments or even in normal offices, or rented rooms where no pipeline to the outside can be installed. So, our goal was a flexible, mobile solution with a capacity of minimum 500 m³/h and the opportunity to blow cleaned air back into the room or even outside.
Last but not least we found the German company Pooch Klimatechnik GmbH who designs and engineers special filter solutions worldwide. The result will now be introduced and is called: TEPEDE VOCAL-3L.

Why this name. The characters stand for Violent Organic Chemistry Air Liquid based 3 Level filter solution. Which means that we use a newly designed liquid and 2 additional filter stages to get cleaned air.
